A Bench, a Bay, and Twenty Years of Writing Numbers Down

How It Started

The shop began because a golfer walked in with a set of irons that had been bent by three different people in three different states, none of whom had written down what they did. Nobody could tell him what he was actually playing. Putting that set on a gauge and producing a single sheet of paper listing every real number took forty minutes, and the relief on his face was the entire business plan.

Twenty years later that is still what happens here more than anything else. People arrive not knowing what they own. We measure it and tell them. Sometimes the answer is that a new club is warranted; more often it is that the set they have has never been set up properly.

Why It Stayed Small

Two bays, two builders, one bench each. Adding a third would mean adding a third person's judgement about tolerance, and tolerance is the whole product. Every club that leaves this shop is weighed to a tenth of a gram and gauged twice, once before assembly and once after cure, and that standard is easier to hold across two pairs of hands than across five.

It also means the person who fitted you is the person who built your club and will be the person who answers when you call about it in three years. There is no service desk to route you through.

What We Are Not

We are not a retailer. There is no wall of clubs to browse and no seasonal sale. We are not a teaching facility; if your problem is technique we will say so and point you toward one of the coaches in the area who does that work well. We are not a demo day operation either — nobody from a manufacturer sets up a tent in this car park.

What we are is a build shop with a measurement bay attached, which is a narrower business than most and a more honest one.

The Cattlemen Road Bay

Bay 7 sits in a light industrial row about a mile north of Clark Road. It is not scenic. There is a roller door, a concrete floor, a hitting net with a turf board in front of it, and a bench running the length of the back wall with the grinder at one end and the curing rack at the other. Parking is directly outside and there is no appointment desk, because there is no receptionist.

Golfers who have been coming here for a decade tend to describe the place as a workshop rather than a store, which is accurate and which we take as a compliment.

Two people work here and both of them build. There is no separate fitting staff and no sales role. Read their backgrounds on the team page, or just call the shop — whoever picks up is one of them.
