90 Minutes · One Golfer, One BayThe driver is the club people are most willing to spend money on and least willing to measure honestly. A ninety-minute session here is mostly spent finding out what happens when you miss, because you will miss far more often than you will flush it.
Given twenty swings, almost any modern driver will produce one number worth screenshotting. That number is close to meaningless. What matters is the shape of the whole distribution: how far the ball goes when contact lands a half-inch toward the toe, how much side-spin appears when it lands toward the heel, whether a low strike on the face falls off a cliff or merely dips.
We record face location on every shot, then plot ball speed against it. Two heads that look identical on a spec sheet routinely differ by three or four percent in what they return from a typical off-centre strike, and three percent of ball speed is roughly seven yards for most golfers in this shop. That is a real difference, and it is invisible if you only look at your best swing.
We work these one at a time, and in this sequence, because each one changes the meaning of the ones after it.
Almost every driver sold off a rack is longer than the golfer swinging it can control. Longer is only faster if the contact stays central, and for most people it does not. We usually start at your current length, then test half an inch shorter. The number of golfers who gain distance by losing length surprises people every single week.
Once length is settled, heads get compared at matched loft and weight. The question is not which is longest but which is flattest across the face map.
Weight first, then bend profile, then flex designation last — the letter printed on the shaft is the least reliable thing about it. We profile raw shafts on the frequency analyser rather than trusting the label.
Fine tuning at the end. The adjustable sleeve is a real tool but it is not a substitute for the three decisions above, and using it to paper over a wrong shaft never lasts a season.
