Where shaft weight and profile have the largest single effect on the outcome.
This page exists because the same six questions come up in the bay every week. It is written to be read before a session, so we can spend your bench time measuring rather than explaining.
If you change nothing else about a shaft, weight will still be the property that changes your swing the most. It affects tempo, it affects where the club feels heavy during transition, and it affects how consistently you can find the centre of the face. Ten grams is a noticeable step for most golfers. Twenty grams is a different club.
The usual failure mode is a golfer being sold something too light because light sounds fast. Speed gained from a lighter shaft is real but small, and it is frequently cancelled out by the strike quality lost. On the bench we start from what you play now, move in one step, and let the dispersion pattern make the decision.

There is no industry standard behind the letters R, S and X. One manufacturer's stiff is another manufacturer's regular, and within a single brand two models carrying the same letter can measure fifteen cycles per minute apart. The letter tells you roughly where the shaft sits inside that manufacturer's own range, and nothing more.
What we measure instead is the bend profile: how stiff the shaft is at the butt, at the middle and at the tip, described as three separate numbers rather than one. A shaft with a firm butt and a soft tip behaves completely differently from one with the reverse arrangement, even when both are labelled stiff and both weigh the same.
The section that flexes most under load has a large influence on launch and on how the head feels through impact. A tip-soft shaft tends to add dynamic loft and a slightly higher flight. A tip-stiff shaft holds the head back and generally lowers launch and spin. Neither is better; the right one depends on what your delivery already produces.
What we watch for is the mismatch: a golfer who already delivers plenty of loft being put into a tip-soft shaft, so the ball balloons and the wind eats it. On the exposed courses along the coast that mistake costs more than it would inland.
Torque is resistance to twisting along the shaft's length, quoted in degrees. Lower numbers mean a firmer feel and, in theory, less face rotation on off-centre strikes. In practice, torque is strongly linked to weight — heavier shafts usually have lower torque — so it is rarely an independent decision. It matters most for players with high speed who feel a light shaft as unstable rather than as fast.
An identical raw shaft can be built into three noticeably different clubs depending on how much is trimmed from the tip before installation. Trimming stiffens the tip section, lowers launch and lowers spin. Manufacturers publish trim charts, and a builder who ignores them produces a set that steps unevenly.
This is one of the biggest quiet differences between a bench build and a factory build. When we build a set here, every shaft is trimmed to the published profile for its position in the set and then frequency-checked afterwards to confirm the step landed where it should. It takes longer. It is also why a set built here matches itself.
Cutting half an inch from the butt of a shaft makes it play measurably stiffer and makes the head feel lighter. Both effects have to be accounted for at build time, usually with tip weight added back inside the head. A club shortened by somebody who skipped that step will feel dead, and no amount of grip changing will bring it back.
