Turf Interaction: Bounce, Sole Width, and the Ground Under You

We bought the pressure mat five years before anyone locally was asking for one, and I still think it is the most useful instrument in the shop. Everything else measures what happens to the ball. The mat measures what happens to the club, which is where most bad iron shots are actually decided.

Because here is the thing that gets lost in a fitting bay full of screens: the face touches the ball for about half a thousandth of a second. The sole touches the ground for considerably longer, and it does so under load, and what it does during that contact determines whether the head arrives at the ball with the speed and the loft you thought it had.

Four Numbers That Describe a Sole

Ignore grind names. Every sole on the market can be described with four measurements, and unlike grind names these can be compared directly across manufacturers.

  • Effective bounce. The angle between the ground and the sole when the club is soled square. Not the stamped number — the stamped number assumes a lie angle and a shaft lean you may not have.
  • Sole width. Front to back. Wider spreads the load over more area, which resists digging but also raises the centre of gravity and changes how the club sits behind the ball.
  • Camber. The curvature from leading edge to trailing edge. Camber is what allows a sole to work across a range of shaft leans rather than only one.
  • Relief. Material ground away at the heel, the toe or the trailing edge. Relief changes how the club behaves when it is not square, which is most of the time.

Entry, Travel, Exit

On the turf board I look at three moments. Entry is where the sole first contacts the surface and at what angle. Travel is how far it moves through the surface and how much the head decelerates while it does. Exit is whether the trailing edge releases cleanly or drags.

Most fittings only ever consider the first of those. But a sole that enters beautifully and then drags on exit costs measurable head speed, and it costs it after impact in the sense that the golfer feels it and adjusts on the next swing. That adjustment is where the inconsistency comes from.

The golfer does not feel the physics. They feel the last swing, and they change something.

Steep and Shallow Need Opposite Things

A steep delivery arrives with the leading edge travelling downward at a meaningful angle. It needs bounce and it needs width, because the sole has to stop the head descending before the leading edge buries. Give a steep player a narrow, low-bounce sole and they will take divots you could plant something in.

A shallow delivery arrives almost parallel to the ground. It needs the leading edge to stay low, which means less bounce and often less width, because too much of either lifts the leading edge and produces thin contact on tight lies. Give a shallow player a wide, high-bounce sole on firm ground and they will blade it.

Neither player is doing anything wrong. They just need different geometry, and the number of golfers playing precisely the wrong one because the set came that way is remarkable.

The Ground Is Half the Equation

All of the above assumes a surface. Change the surface and the same club behaves differently:

That last row is worth dwelling on. A range mat cannot be penetrated, so a sole that would bury itself in real turf simply bounces off the mat and produces a decent-looking shot. Golfers get fitted on mats, love the club, and then find it unplayable on the course. The turf board here uses a replaceable strike surface for exactly that reason: it has to be possible for the club to go into it, or the measurement means nothing.

The Practical Test You Can Run Yourself

Put a strip of tape across the sole of your seven iron and play nine holes. Then look at it. If the wear is concentrated at the leading edge, you are digging and you need more bounce or width. If it is concentrated at the trailing edge, you are shallow with the shaft leaning back, and you need less. If it runs diagonally from the heel forward to the toe, your lie angle is wrong before we even discuss the sole.

That costs nothing, takes one round, and tells you more about your iron fit than a launch monitor session on a mat ever will.
