Wedge Fitting for Bermuda Grown Over a Sand Base

Almost every wedge grind sold in this country was designed and tested on cool-season turf growing on a clay-based profile. That is where most of the golf industry sits, it is where most tour events are played, and it is a reasonable design target. It is also not what is under your feet in Sarasota County.

What we have here is Bermuda — usually a hybrid cultivar on the fairways and something finer around the greens — grown on sand. Sometimes on a lot of sand. That combination behaves differently enough that borrowing wedge conclusions from elsewhere leads golfers wrong, and it accounts for a fair share of the wedge sessions booked in this bay.

Two Seasons, Two Completely Different Surfaces

The awkward part is that the surface changes twice a year and the club does not.

From roughly June to September the grass is growing hard, holding moisture and sitting up. The ball perches. There is cushion under it. A wedge with modest bounce will slip the leading edge under the ball and then dig into the soft profile beneath, and the shot comes up short and fat.

From roughly January to March the same turf is dormant, thin and tight, and the sand beneath it is firm. Now there is nothing under the ball at all. A wedge with generous bounce will contact the ground before the leading edge reaches the ball, and the club skids into the equator. Thin and long.

Same golfer, same swing, same club, opposite miss. Six months apart.

Golfers here spend years believing their short game breaks down in February. Frequently it is the wedge, doing exactly what its geometry says it should.

Why Sand Underneath Changes the Answer

On a clay-based profile the ground resists the sole fairly uniformly. The divot has structure. Bounce works the way the designer intended because the surface pushes back predictably.

Sand does not push back the same way. Under load it displaces, so a sole that would ride on a clay surface will sink slightly before it starts to resist. The practical consequence is that effective bounce reads lower here than the stamped number suggests, particularly in the wet season when the sand is saturated. A twelve-degree wedge in Ohio does not play like a twelve-degree wedge on a Sarasota fairway in August.

That is the single most useful thing I can tell anyone shopping for wedges here: expect to need a degree or two more bounce than a general recommendation would give you for the wet months, and expect that to be uncomfortable in February.

How We Split the Difference

You cannot fit one wedge to both surfaces. So we fit the bag rather than the club, and we split the range deliberately:

  • Sand wedge toward the wet season. More effective bounce, a wider sole and full camber. This is the club that has to work when the ground is soft and holding water, which is more months of the year than not.
  • Lob wedge toward the dry season. Less bounce, narrower sole, generous heel relief so it can be opened on a tight lie without the leading edge lifting off the ground.
  • Gap wedge matched to the iron set. This club is used almost entirely from full or three-quarter swings off decent lies, so it should behave like the pitching wedge above it rather than like a specialty club.

The result is that whatever the ground is doing, there is a club in the bag suited to it. It is a compromise. I say so out loud in the session, because a fitter who claims to have solved the problem rather than managed it is not being straight with you.

Heel Relief Matters More Here Than Anywhere

Bermuda greenside rough grabs the hosel. It is stickier than the equivalent cool-season lie and it will close a face that was open at address. Generous heel relief — material ground away from the inside of the sole — lets the club sit lower when opened and lets it slide rather than catch.

For golfers who like to open the face around the greens, heel relief is the specification I would prioritise above bounce angle itself. It costs nothing on a full shot and it changes the shot from thirty yards out considerably.

Bunkers, Because the Sand Varies

Bunker sand around here ranges from soft imported white sand at the newer clubs to coarser, more packed material at the older municipal courses. A wedge fitted to fluffy sand will bounce off a firm bunker floor and thin the ball across the green. If most of your golf is at one course, we fit to that bunker sand specifically. If you play widely, we fit toward the firmer end, because a thin bunker shot is a worse outcome than a slightly heavy one.

Start With Gapping Anyway

Everything above assumes the lofts in your bag make sense, and often they do not. Modern iron sets have strong pitching wedges, and a golfer who bought a fifty-two degree gap wedge to sit under a forty-three degree pitching wedge has a nine-degree step and a thirty-yard hole in their scoring range. No grind in the world fixes that.

Two thirds of the wedge sessions here turn out to be gapping problems wearing a grind costume. Measure the carries first. The turf conversation matters, but it matters second.
